Within the women's market, large/plus size apparel continued to outperform other segments. Sales of large sizes grew 10 percent for the year, according to NPD. Apparel sized 16 and over now comprises a $26 million market, which accounts for 27 percent of all dollars spent on women's apparel.

The trend that began with "Casual Fridays" in the 1990's has matured into a key market driver for the apparel industry. NPD's study uncovered that almost without exception, apparel categories posting the most robust growth are those that suit a dressed down lifestyle. Conversely, tailored categories stalled following a brief upswing in 1998.

Discount stores surpassed department stores in market share in 1995 and have been widening their lead since. In 1999, discount stores had a 7 percent revenue gain for the year making them the fastest growing retail channel for apparel. The growth in the discount store market helped bring them above a 20 percent market share in dollar volume, for the first time. American shoppers are now spending more apparel dollars in discount stores than in any other channel except specialty stores.

Also posting strong gains this year were specialty stores and department stores, each of which outpaced the overall market growth with 5% gains. However the major department store chain category, made up of the giants J.C. Penney, Sears, Wards, etc., languished dropping down less than 1 percent, according to NPD.
